Procedure text

Today we have been looking at the features of a procedure text.

We looked at the features it contains.

Then we decided to make some paper planes and think of the steps we needed in order to create it.

Finally we flew them to see who had made the plane which could fly the longest distance.

Fond Farewell Margaret

This week we said a fond farewell to Margaret. It has been a pleasure having Margaret in Room 6 and we are going to miss her a lot. Thanks to her whanau for bringing in some lovely Kia to share with us all today. Pizza and chips! So if you’re child didn’t eat much food it was because they had a feed and had some lollies too!
Good luck to Margaret and her family as they travel to Australia. May everything work out well for you all.
God bless you all and safe travels.

New experiences

This week a group read a story Dimitri’s lunch. The character in the story had different things for lunch. One of the things we talked about was hummus. Some of the children had never tasted it before so we decided it was time to give it a go. We had carrot sticks with it to make it a healthy treat. Nearly everyone liked it and came back for seconds and thirds. If you read about something with your child and they haven’t experienced it before then give it a go!

There have been a couple of queries about Junior Athletics.  We have a packed calendar this term so, rather than overloading our teachers and kids with another event, we have chosen to get behind the school Tryathlon. We also have a zoo trip, a forest trip, a school production, end of year liturgies and other celebrations so there's plenty of opportunity for families to get involved.  Thank you for your understanding.

We are all showing signs of the 'end-of-year-slump'.  Kids (and teachers) are quite tired and a little more sensitive than usual. There are a few things that will really help us to stay happy and healthy during the last few weeks...
1. Make sure your kids have a water bottle in class. Staying hydrated is really important with the changeable weather.
2. Check your bedtimes.  The recommended hours of sleep for 6-13 year olds is about 11 hours.
3. If your child is genuinely sick, or you suspect they might be, please keep them at home.  We are all a bit run down and are much more likely to catch bugs.  Teachers are flat out and less likely to see 'the signs' - our poor caretaker.
4. Sick of school (we all have those days). Telling your children to call home IF they feel sick isn't a great idea - it makes them focus on the escape rather the the fun activities going on around them.  This leads to some very dramatic scenes as they try to show us how very, very ill they are.  If some kids are to be believed we should have an ambulance on standby. Just let us know, if there is an issue, and we'll jolly them along. We really do look after them - we're not mean.
5. The end of year feels like a sprint to the finish, sometimes.  Make sure you give the kids a little downtime after school.  We are working flat out in class and we are all are tired - if you can, avoid dragging the kids around to run errands after school. Try shopping online with a cuppa at home - you could probably do with a bit of chill time, too.

Have a great week!

Book character day

We had such fun figuring out our different Book characters. Can you guess which ones Room 6 were?

Today most of us dressed up as a book character. Well done Room 6 there were so many different costumes. Lots of people had really thought had about putting their outfits together. Thanks whanau for your help and support!

Local Hero

Yesterday we had a local hero visit Room 6. Bruce Johnson who was awarded the Local Hero Award

medal last night. A big well done to Bruce for his 43 years of work and service within the local community we are very proud of you. He certainly deserves the medal.

Publishing tools

This week we have been working on the book ‘The very cranky bear’. Instead of writing our findings we used Garage band and Voice typing on google to record our voices.

It was amazing to see everyone working so closely and collaborating. We had some little teachers- Hugh and Alana showing others what to do!

Work in progress!!

Lighthouse keepers lunch

This week we have been basing our learning experiences around the book ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’. One of the tasks we were doing today was making a plan to create a zip line. The children like the characters in the story were aiming to get the basket from one side to another. Lots of talking and collaboration going on it was fabulous! Let’s see what they come up with!

Ask your child what resources they need to bring in to start making their creative creations.
