Term 3 Week 2

WEEK 2 TERM 3.

Cook Island Language Week

Reading Logs
Reading logs are due back by Wednesday this week.  We want ALL Manuka kids to return a reading log.  Don't panic about finding the reading log sheet, any piece of paper will do - just write your name and room number, the titles of books you read during the holidays (and the first week back), get a big person to sign it and bring it in.  If you didn't read a book, maybe you read some instructions for a game, a recipe, song lyrics, prayers or bible stories,... If you read it, write it on the list.

Bake Sale
We are still fundraising for our trip to the zoo. We're getting closer and closer.  This time we thought we might try a bake sale. We would like donations of cakes, biscuits and slices to sell on Tuesday, pretty please.  Each piece will be sold for $1 or $2 and will get us even closer to our epic trip.  Thanks heaps for your support.

Hands up

Yesterday evening a few of us teachers were lucky enough to go on a course. One of the things they suggested was trying to get the children to join in a discussion without putting their hands up.
Room 6 took on the challenge and succeeded with flying colours. We thought about some of the things we needed to do.
One was to listen carefully to others ideas. Wait until people had finished speaking before we could have our say and thirdly if anyone else tried to speak at the same time as us we should work it out who, could go first.
We all enjoyed it so much that we are going to try it again tomorrow. We celebrated with a “wave your hands in the air” song.
Super job Room 6

Making boats-Exploration

As part of our concept ‘Exploration’ we are reading books and poems about Pirates. One of the things we have been aiming to do in Play based learning is to make a Pirate boat that can float. The children are trying to come up with a plan and use this to create their boat which needs to float and be waterproof. Look at the different things some of your children have created.

GO4it

Today was our first session of Go4it

Daniel Fisher is our new person to run the program. He has some rules for us.

Welcome back

what a lovely surprise yesterday morning! Alana and Fynn presented me with some cookies and a beautiful welcome back card. Great to be back!

odd and even numbers

Yesterday we were thinking about odd and even numbers. No one knew how to find out if a number was odd or even. We talked about how to work it out. One way is to look at the last number e.g. 325 you would look at the 5. Put 5 on your fingers and try to pair your fingers up. If one hasn’t got a partner it’s odd. If everyone has a partner the number is even. Keep working on finding odd and even numbers.

Perseverance-one of our values

we have been discussing Perseverance. Deacon Mike came in and told us stories about how he persevered in different ways. Also he told us the story of Daniel and the lions. We then told each other about times when we had persevered. Everyone completed a spinner of Daniel and the lions. They look amazing Room 6!

Self editing poems

Room 6 were working in pairs to self edit their poems. Everyone wrote a poem yesterday about their chosen topic. Each person is using their marking strip to fix up their work. Then their Partners will read through their buddies work to make sure they have included all the items on their strip. Great cooperation from everyone today-well done!
